Some of the costumes from the 1984 Carnival. Adults as well as children used to dress up, as hown tby the first picture, with Phyllis Short, Joan Jacobs and Ethel Curran in Robin Hood-themed costumes.
Each year, there were several themes that people could choose from – here, Worzel Gummidge characters and Robin Hood characters were among the chosen themes. In other years, themes have included pirates, clowns, boxers, Mexicans, Flamenco dancers, fairies, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Pearly Kings/Queens, and sailors.
But there were also costumes that appeared every year, such as brides and bridgegrooms, or traditional flower-girls and page-boys.
